SGBK Switzerland

The Swiss Society of Women Artists in the Visual Arts, SGBK, is a body of the professional association of visual women artists. Founded in 1902, it is divided in three sections: Basel (Basel-City/Basel-Country), Berne/Romandie and Zurich, and represents the established as well as the alternative cultural scene. The SGBK brings women artists and their artistic work to the public eye.

The SGBK is specifically networked with other cultural fields. It is a member of the Suisseculture Sociale, the umbrella organisation of professional cultural workers in Switzerland. Alongside cultural policy, it is fighting for the acceptance of diversity and equal opportunities in Switzerland.

Strict guidelines are applied by competent, expert jurors when accepting active members. The SGBK is known as an ideal, nationwide network for women artists and at the same time a springboard for the admission to other peer organisations.

As winner of the 2012 Equal Opportunities Award of the cantons of Basel-City and Basel-Country, the SGBK also contributes to the wide recognition of women artists among the broad public.
